1) What have you been making lately?

I’m working on a user reviews and Q&A site called gdgt that’s growing nicely and has been keeping me really busy. It’s a really amazing community of gadget and technology experts.

2) What’s your favorite and/or newest tool that you use for work?

Novatel’s MiFi 4510L, which runs on Verizon’s LTE network. I routinely get speeds around 14 Mbps on this thing, which is often faster than the WiFi at whatever hotel or cafe I might be working at when I’m out and about.

3) What’s your favorite and/or newest tool that you use for fun?

Samsung’s 46-inch D8000 [television]. This is a loaner — which means I have to send it back in few weeks and so probably shouldn’t get too attached — but the quality of the display is phenomenal and it has an extremely thin bezel. It also has built-in apps like Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, etc., which is awesome since I canceled my cable TV subscription earlier this year and am getting all of my TV via the internet.

4) What’s something great you’ve read lately?

Lost to the West, by Lars Brownworth. Really fascinating history of the Byzantine Empire, I was surprised by little I knew about that era and how the Roman Empire essentially continued on until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. There’s a great podcast series the author did as well.

5) Who should I interview for this series?

Umair Haque would be good, he’s been doing a lot of important writing about the economy and the institutional failures that got us into the mess we’re in.

The Creators series highlights my favorite creative-types and the tools they use for work and fun. Previously: Zach Zamboni, cinematographer for “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” on Travel Channel.
