Photoset by Tumblr

It’s “a new app for creating and sharing beautiful high-res photosets on your iPhone or iPad.” Looks nice, and I’m looking forward to trying it.

  1. Interesting to see Tumblr start a new brand and domain for Photoset. Probably smart — there’s definitely overlap in people who might want to use Photoset and people who use Tumblr, but there are also probably many people who might only want to use one.
  2. It’s hard not to knock Tumblr for being late and slow to mobile. The first time I met David Karp in the summer of 2007, he was showing off Tumblr on a brand-new iPhone, and it was one of the coolest things I’d ever seen. Sharing photos on an iPhone by posting them to Tumblr seemed one of the most obvious things. But Tumblr’s app situation was lousy for a long time. We shouldn’t have even needed Instagram — that could have easily been Tumblr’s territory, but it wasn’t.
  3. In the era of “streams” and sharing photos as you take them, à la Instagram and Twitter, the idea of bundling photos into a batch and shipping them off together seems foreign to me. It’s what I did on Facebook weeks or months after I got back from a trip in, say, 2009, but not much since then. But I’ve used apps like Diptic and Mixel to package photos together for Instagram and Twitter more recently. Maybe I’ll find Photoset useful?

Anyway, will be interesting to see if this takes off and/or does anything for Tumblr.
