When will Apple cut Intel loose?

Bloomberg says today that it might happen eventually, but Apple is “unlikely to switch in the next few years.”

I was thinking about this over the weekend while admiring the iPad mini’s thinness, and pondering how its tiny battery lasts so much longer than my Intel-powered MacBook Air’s. Thin, little tablets are clearly the future of the “computer” industry, and Intel is arguably falling behind even faster than Microsoft. (Never mind smartphones, another huge industry where Intel has been left behind.)
